Premiering in 1938, the original production both moved and stunned the audiences of its day with its deliberately sparse set and deceptively simple dialogue.  The film version starred a young William Holden in 1941.  There have been significant revivals done throughout the years, most notably in 1988 with Spalding Grey and 2002 with Paul Newman making a long awaited return to Broadway.  The famous 1977 Television presentation has been lauded as the definitive version by the estate of Thornton Wilder.

This is some of what the critics have said:

"Thornton Wilder's masterpiece...An immortal tale of small town morality [and]...a classic of soft spoken theater." -The New York Times

"Beautiful and remarkable one of the sagest, warmest and most deeply human scripts to have come out of our theatre...A spiritual experience." -The New York Post
